A Message from Your Family Physicians

Many of you remember when Dr. Helen Chen and I (Dr Winnie Su) started our practice together in April, 2003 at our original location at 2184 West Broadway. Two and a half years later,  Dr. Jenny Liu joined us in September, 2005 after covering my first maternity leave.  In 2020, we moved just a few blocks over to this custom-built office.

Thank you for entrusting us with your health for over 20 years.  We are grateful to all the countless families who have given us the privilege of delivering your children (and grandchildren). We are blessed to witness many families “grow up” in our practice.

The three of us would not have been able to practice the way we have without each other. Therefore, we are sad to announce that as of July, 2026, each of us will pursue different paths. Dr. Helen Chen will retire.  Dr. Jenny Liu will move her practice to North Vancouver, where she lives, to be closer to family.  I (Dr. Winnie Su) am leaving this practice to pursue a role in medical education (at UBC) and to spend more time with family as my husband navigates some health challenges.

It is important to us that the practice we built over 23 years will continue to serve its patients and the community with high-quality patient-centred care.  Therefore, Kits Family Practice will be passed onto a compassionate and competent family physician, Dr. Adeyinka Adeniyi (see his biography below). Our medical office assistants, Joy and Sandy, will stay on to serve you. Our associates will likely stay as well (Dr. Alesia DiCicco and Dr Anna Wolak).  Other family physicians may join as well.  We believe that providing patient care as a team is the best approach for accessibility, sustainability and continuity of care.   We will keep provide updates on our website.  https://kitsfamilypractice.ca/

You do NOT need to take any action.

Please continue reading our letters to our patients and Dr. Adeniyi’s biography below.

For the patients of Dr. Helen Chen

Dear patients,

After practicing for 26 years, I have decided to retire in July 2026. As a family physician, it has been my honor and privilege to be part of your lives for so long. I have watched your families expand, kids grow up, shared your joys and sorrows, and developed such deep connections with so many of you. There are at least three families in my practice that I have cared for over four generations in the same family. I thank you and value the trust you have placed in me. I also appreciate all the care and support you have given me and my family over the years. I truly feel blessed by having such a fulfilling and meaningful career in family medicine that has allowed me to grow as a person and a physician. I am also extremely thankful to have worked with my amazing colleagues all these years, Dr. Winnie Su and Dr. Jenny Liu, who are knowledgeable, compassionate and dedicated physicians. Our team of staff and associates over the years at Kits Family Practice have been like family members. My heart is filled with gratitude to my patients, colleagues and staff as I conclude this chapter of my life!

When I broke the news of my retirement, many have asked what I will do. I look forward to spending more time with my family and friends, exploring the world, and maybe learning a new skill or two. I also want to do some charity and volunteer work both here and abroad. I haven’t quite figured everything out yet. I am excited about the possibilities and the potential to use my energy in a different way.

Both Dr. Su and Dr. Liu will also take steps to change their practices at the same time. We have been fortunate to find a doctor who is willing to take over Kits Family Practice starting in July. Dr. Adeyinka Adeniyi (Dr. Ade) will take over the care of all of my patients who want to stay at Kits Family Practice after I retire. My last day of work will be June 30, 2026. He wants to continue the legacy of patient-centered care we have created over the past 23 years here. If you want to stay, you don’t have to do anything. For those of you who prefer to find other doctors, please, look at this website:  https://findadoctorbc.ca/. Once you find one, you can request your records to be transferred to the new doctor. We charge a standard fee of $44 per file as per Doctors of BC guidelines. Thank you in advance for your understanding and ongoing support during this transition period. We are all learning through the process. Please be kind to our staff as they will need to handle extra work. We will send updates to inform you of any progress along the way.

I want to wish you and your loved ones great health and every success in the years to come!

Sincerely with gratitude,

Helen Chen

For the patients of Dr. Jenny Liu

After 21 years of working together, my partners Dr. Chen and Dr. Su will be stepping away from Kits Family Practice. I wish them the very best in the future and feel truly blessed to have worked alongside such amazing physician colleagues in our supportive team for over two decades.

As many of you know, I live on the North Shore and have been commuting for over 20 years — including by transit for the last 10 years. As of July 1, 2026, I will be relocating my practice to Symphony Clinic at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. The clinic is conveniently located across from Lonsdale Quay, only a 2-minute covered walk from the SeaBus terminal, making it easily accessible by transit and SkyTrain connections. More information about the clinic can be found here:  https://symphonyhealthmd.com/

This decision was not made lightly, as I know it may cause inconvenience for many of my panel of 1500 patients. However, with health changes affecting my family and myself over time, the transit commute to Vancouver has become unsustainable. Moving my practice to the North Shore is the best decision for my long-term sustainability to continue providing care and for my and my family’s wellbeing.

In the new office, I will continue to offer a mix of virtual and in-person care. It is important that patients are able to attend in-person visits in North Vancouver when clinically necessary. The office is easily accessible by transit via SkyTrain connections to the SeaBus.

It is assumed that you will continue as my patient and that your care — including your medical records — will transfer with me automatically to Symphony Clinic in North Vancouver. No action is required on your part and you do not need to contact our office unless otherwise notified.  Please do not contact our office unless you intend to transfer your care to another family practice or would like to remain a patient at Kits Family Practice with Dr. Adeniyi.

For those who will be unable to come to North Vancouver in person I will continue to provide ongoing care to you virtually as I always have until you are able to transition establishing care with another physician closer to home. I want to be transparent that, depending on personal or family health considerations, I may need to adjust the size of my patient panel. If necessary, priority will be given to patients who are able to reasonably attend in-person visits in North Vancouver. For this reason, I encourage patients who live farther away to consider making longer-term plans for local care where possible.  I strongly encourage patients to explore local options early and to place their names on clinic waitlists where possible. The most up-to-date website listing family physicians accepting new patients or maintaining waitlists is:  https://findadoctorbc.ca/

If you establish care with a new family physician elsewhere, please have your new physician’s office send us a chart transfer request and my staff will contact you for a wrap up visit with me and to collect the standard chart transfer fee of $44 per patient.

More information will be shared as details become available, including whether and when patients may have an opportunity to meet Dr. Adeniyi for those interested in transitioning care locally.

Thank you for your continued trust and for allowing me to be part of your care. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this transition may cause and greatly appreciate your understanding.

Dr. Jenny Liu

For the patients of Dr. Winnie Su

I hope you have enjoyed reading my email updates the past several years. Here is one more:

To my dear patients,

Words cannot express how incredibly honoured and humbled I feel to have been your family physician for the past 23 years. Thank you for letting me come alongside you and trusting me to help you navigate your health challenges.  I am forever grateful for this immense privilege.  You have each taught me to become a better physician.  To the multi-generational families in my practice, you have taught me the value of family and longitudinal family medicine. Thank you for the immense blessing of seeing the birth of the second generation of patients in my practice! I am grateful for your support as I raised my three children, as we went through all the changes in staff and associates, and as we moved our office in 2020! Thank you for supporting my love for teaching and contributing to the education of countless medical students and residents over the years.

I am beyond blessed to have worked with two amazing physicians, Dr. Helen Chen and Dr. Jenny Liu, for over two decades, and I am excited for them as they enter the next chapter of life.  We could not do the work we do without each other’s support.

I am happy to share that I am pivoting into a medical education role at UBC (in Family Medicine).   Giving up management of this practice will allow me to pursue my passion in teaching and mentorship. Ultimately, I hope to make a positive impact in family medicine in BC.

Unfortunately, another reason for my leaving KFP is that my husband has been recently diagnosed  with a health issue for which he just had surgery and will need further treatment. He is the person who has kept our practice running since its inception in 2003.  From looking after payroll and book-keeping to providing endless technical support to picking up our toilet paper and vaccines, he worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes for over 20 years. I truly could not have been your doctor without his unwavering love and support.

Even though I may return to do some clinical work in future, I will be passing on my practice to Dr Adeniyi and associates.  However, I want to give patients options and choice. If you prefer to see another physician, please look at this website: https://findadoctorbc.ca/.  Dr. Nelson Chow at Maywood Medical Clinic is also actively accepting my patients.

Please note that due to family and other work obligations, I have reduced my hours in the office. Specifically, I will be away the latter 2 weeks of March while my husband undergoes treatment. If I am unavailable, please book with my locum/any associate physician. We will keep you updated with any new developments. I understand that this news may be upsetting, so I want to thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.

With deep gratitude and appreciation,

Dr. Winnie Su
